A very welcoming crematorium, providing comfort and warmth. We had a very professional and supportive celebrant and the service was excellent.

Since opening in March 2009, Wear Valley Crematorium has become a trusted place for families and friends to come together for meaningful funeral services. Set within eight acres of landscaped grounds, nestled at the bottom of Coundon Village in Bishop Auckland, this is a peaceful place for reflection. Our gardens have been thoughtfully designed to provide privacy and comfort during moments of remembrance, with expansive open spaces and private memorial gardens.
Our welcoming chapel at Wear Valley Crematorium comfortably seats up to 75 people, with space for an additional 20 guests to stand. For larger funeral services a speaker system extends outside to our canopied space, where further guests are invited to stand and listen to the service. The chapel offers state-of-the-art facilities to help personalise the service, including screens to display visual tributes and the option to play pre-recorded music of your choice. There is space for singers and musicians too.

If you need support to arrange a cremation in Bishop Auckland, or nearby areas such as Durham, Darlington or Spennymoor, we work with local funeral directors, faith leaders and celebrants across County Durham. Wear Valley Crematorium is equipped with a music system, screens for visual tributes and webcasting for those joining remotely. A hearing loop and fully accessible facilities including baby changing are also available. If you'd like to arrange a tour, please contact us.

Cremation services at Wear Valley Crematorium
We offer attended and unattended cremation services at Wear Valley Crematorium
An attended cremation
Where family and friends come together for a funeral or memorial service in our chapel. You can personalise the service with music, readings and tributes. Loved ones will be able to spend a few moments with the coffin before leaving the chapel.
An attended direct cremation
This option enables families to attend the crematorium to see the coffin in the chapel. Although there is no funeral or memorial service, you can choose the music that is playing and will be able to spend a few moments with the coffin.
An unattended, direct cremation
A direct cremation means there is no funeral or memorial service in the chapel, and no mourners in attendance.
For more information about personalising a service, speak to your funeral director, or contact us.
All cremation fees at Wear Valley Crematorium include:
• The use of our chapel
• A single tribute photo displayed on screen throughout the service (not available for attended direct cremations)
• The use of our state-of-the-art media system to play music of your choice
